Colourful Take On Issues

Ribbons of Colour is the title of The Lodge School's annual pageant, which comes off on Saturday June 18 at the Dining Club.

Organised by the Student Council of the St. John school, each contestant had to choose something that affects persons in today's society, whether it be domestic violence, HIV or bullying and select the colour that goes with it to help prevent or show awareness of the issue.

The contestants had to research these issues as they relate to Barbados and have committed themselves to making the pageant night different. They want to make this a forum for the youth to hear about the aspect.

The organisers are promising a night of glamour and the contestants have been preparing for several months. They are nine contestants in the Lodge School Pageant 2011.

New BTA Chief Points To Humble Beginnings

By his own account, Adrian Elcock “grew up very humble”. “I can’t say I grew up with the gold spoon or silver spoon some people think that I have,” he said in an interview with the SUNDAY SUN.

“We grew up in a three-room chattel house in Bank Hall. I was eight or nine years old before moving into a small wall house.”The 41-year-old businessman was appointed chairman of the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) on April 3. He was chairman of the Child Care Board under the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) administration and later served as deputy chairman of Barbados Conference Services Limited under the present administration.

Yet when Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy invited him to be BTA chairman, he said he was “surprised”. Others within tourism circles also seemed to have been surprised, considering that Elcock does not have the kind of tourism background they thought would have been necessary for anyone filling the post.

But Elcock countered: “In terms of what the naysayers have said, I guess I too have gotten accustomed to seeing tourism being run by one group of people and one set of people speaking on behalf of the industry . . .

“It did not seem as if medium-sized businesses like ours that have been relatively successful in our marketplace were invited to be a part of it. It seemed as if those that were in it controlled it and they controlled who entered it.“I have never said no to any minister in any government that has asked me to serve,” he stressed.

He pointed out: “I have come from a family business which, by any definition, has been successful. I have been a large part of growing that business and taking it to another level with my brother, with my dad and the other partners that work with us.”

The family business of which Elcock speaks is Everson Elcock & Co. Ltd., which is currently celebrating 50 years of operation and of which he is a director. A major division of that business is Exclusive Lighting & Electrical Supplies Ltd. The company was the idea of Elcock’s brother Antonio, another director in the larger firm, and an idea which Elcock developed into a major business.

“I have always felt that our leaders have given us a tremendous platform upon which to build our own personal brand,” says Elcock.“I have been educated in Barbados. I went to Dorothy Smale’s Preparatory School, the Lodge School and then Pace University, New York City, where I graduated with a degree in accounting with a major in public accounting.”

After graduation, he went to work with one of the world’s largest accounting firms, Arthur Andersen, spending eight years in New York.

Responding to his brother’s idea, Elcock came home in January, 1995 to start Exclusive Lighting and went on to join his father’s business as director of finance. After all, this was the business that grew from humble beginnings when Elcock would observe his father setting out from home in a pick-up truck every day, though he was not sure exactly what dad was going out to do.

“My earliest memory of my involvement was going to Baptist House, a place my father had on Constitution Road [St Michael], playing with the red electrical tape, making cricket balls, playing with my brother,” he recalled.“When I think back about it, that was his [father’s] way of immersing us in the business. It created an awareness and I understood that what he did was what put our food on the table.”

In his early teens and while a student of Lodge School, Elcock accompanied his father as he traversed Barbados, calling at homes under construction, offering his electrical building supplies for sale. While dad tried to sell to homeowners, it was Adrian who carried the price sheet and quoted prices. Later, during his regular visits home on holidays from university studies, he did accounting-related chores in the family business.

Proud Barbadian

Elcock boasts of being “a proud Barbadian who believes in the capacity of our country and the capacity of our people to deliver”.

While devoted to his work, he is “a committed family man” to his wife Ann and daughter Sanaa. “Our family traditions and structures are very important to us,” he pointed out. “We sit every Sunday as a family, have lunch with my parents and my brother and his family. Teamwork is part of our family tradition.”

He is also an avowed Christian brought up in the Anglican Church and worships regularly at St George’s Parish Church.

Loyal friend

Elcock declares his loyalty to friends: “I believe in friendships. I am an extremely loyal friend. I am going to stick with you through thick and thin. “I am going to tell you when I think you are wrong and I hope my true friends tell me when they think I am going in the wrong direction.”

He has thrown himself headlong into his new job, clear in his vision of what he wants to achieve. “Am I attacking this job with passion?” he asked. “One hundred and fifty per cent. Am I going to succeed? You sure bet I will. I have that confidence and I know I will. I have a team that will support me.”

Lodge School In Line For Major Upgrade

The much-anticipated physical redevelopment of the Lodge School will commence in a matter of days, but an expanded school plant should not lead to an increased school roll.

So says principal of the Lodge School, Trevor Pilgrim, who was speaking the school’s Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony held yesterday at the Massiah Street, St. John compound.

Pilgrim said that the school is currently overcrowded at a roll of 1 067 and implored the authorities not to increase the school’s roll even more when the physical redevelopment is finished.

“We will have more space but that would just defeat the purpose of the improvement of the facility. We need a smaller number of students to function at optimum academic levels,” he explained.

Speaking about the redevelopment plans, he said, “The former principal’s residence will be the first building to be demolished. This will happen within a matter of days and phase one of the construction process will commence. Phase one will include the construction of two new blocks with two floors each, the demolition of the lower wing that ends at the music room and work on the memorial hall and Block G,” said Pilgrim.

“As soon as phase one ends we will occupy the new building. We would therefore no longer need the prefabricated wooden units which have sprung up on the lawn,” he continued.

The principal explained that the entire physical redevelopment would be done in four stages and will end in 2013.

According to him, it will encompass the whole school, but it will be sequenced in such a way that disruption to the school will be minimised.

“We will also receive a new hall, with a capacity of approximately 1 000 and a new and larger pavilion. In 2013 when construction ends, the Lodge School will enter a new era in its long and illustrious existence, spacious, comfortable, well equipped and driven by highly motivated staff and students. It will be better positioned to achieve its mission,” he said.

“No longer will we have to hold assemblies and ceremonies like this one in the open air and rent tents. The new hall will also be a God-send to the St. John community since it will be large enough to accommodate conferences and community events,” he continued.

Pilgrim noted that in the next three years the school body will have to cope with the noise, dust and industrial challenges which will be created by this large construction process.

“I urge our staff, students and parents to be patient and to understand that some measure of discomfort always accompanies change and progress. We will do our best along with Innotech, the contractors, to reduce as much as possible any discomfort or threat to health and safety that arises from the construction process.”

The Lodge School Celebrates Our Culture And Our Past

THE Lodge School was a sea of blue, yellow and black as students and teachers celebrated the 44th anniversary of Barbados’ Independence yesterday.

The annual event began with a military parade on the playing field and continued with a service of thanksgiving for the school and the nation.

The highlight of the day for the students however, was the cultural presentation which featured the many talents of the students, in song, dance and drama.

Past student John King also attended the event and sang a few of his hits including the popular “All Hands on Deck”.

Images of Barbados of yesteryear were prominently displayed by the second form students in their classrooms.

Organiser of the cultural display, Wynell Yearwood-Scott expressed concern that a number of students were unfamiliar with many of the items that were on display. The comprehensive showcase featured modes of transportation, childhood games and past times, life on the sugar plantation and ‘working hard to make a living.’ (JH)

The Lodge School Looking To Make Its Mark

The Lodge School is poised to take off and with the refurbishments planned for the St. John educational institution, Principal Trevor Pilgrim is suggesting that in a few short years, it will once again become the school of first choice for many Barbadians.

Pilgrim’s comments came yesterday morning during his address at the service of thanksgiving and opening ceremony for the week of activities for the 265th anniversary celebration, on the grounds of Codrington College, the original site of the school.

According to the principal major construction and refurbishment at the school is set to start in the first quarter of next year and will see several new additions to the compound, to help accommodate the growing student roll, which stands now at 1 067, the largest it has ever been in the history of the school, with over 200 of those students being in the sixth forms.

“There are new subjects on the curriculum and better students are being attracted to the school. School effectiveness continues to improve and there is a wide and increasing spread of good external exam results across the fifth and sixth forms every year. Our prowess in sports is legendary, I consider myself privileged to lead the school at this juncture when we are poised to take off,” he said.

Pilgrim said that at the end of the refurbishment, which is expected to take some three to four years to complete, they will have what “amounts” to a new school. He explained that this physical redevelopment, scheduled to start around March 2011, will correct years of deterioration of the physical plant and result in them being the recipients of a new hall, with the capacity to seat at least 1 000, a new pavilion, new classroom blocks and existing blocks, he explained will either be extended and or refurbished.

“We are also developing a strategic plan for the next five years [so] when we return to Codrington five years from now, there will be a new and modern Lodge School. Other entities even including this venerable College will be able to use our upgraded facilities for conferences, sports and community activities,” he stated. (JRT)

Fate placed the three of them at The Lodge School in 1979. Anderson Blood Armstrong, George Jones and Terry Mexican Arthur would actually meet each other a year later through a drive by Mac Fingall for the start of their destiny. The trials of school, the end of almost two decades of working with a top band, and more recently George’s illness have not torn their bond of over 30 years asunder. Mexican will be the first to tell you that he and the other two were not the most diligent of students, but each of them continues to hold fast to the motto of their alma mater: They Can Because They Think They Can.

There is an unshakable loyalty and friendship among the three that they say run deeper than the music, and bridge any distance that circumstances and geography might throw up. Blood and George found themselves in the same class at third form level and they would meet up with Mexican in the music room at every available opportunity to practise on the various instruments, and the only thing they have lived to regret was not taking their Spanish classes. They all smiled fondly as they recalled that prediction from the Spanish teacher. “The music was the common denominator, the gel. I guess over time it would evolve into what it is now,” George explained.

“I remember the three of us – just as we’re here – used to sit at the piano. I play bass, sometimes George, Andy hold the chords, or we would interchange,” Mexican said, with nods of approval from the other two. “One big piano,” Blood interjected. They would soon form a band that would play for concerts at school. Mexican hit the seas shortly after school as a musician and Blood got involved in Gabby’s First-Timers tent and later the Richard Stoute Teen Talent competition, joined the Untouchables Tent and did some overseas tours.

While Blood was pursuing his solo career, George was approached by the Country Theatre Workshop to perform at the Christmas concert and he looked to his buddy Blood. Blood brought in Paul Slater and his old St Giles’ schoolmate Cecil Oshaka Riley, who were both involved in Richard Stoute. That was the beginning of Square One and they would be joined by Alison Hinds and Winston Beckles a little later. Mexican heard the band at the Steel Shed on a trip home from the ship and without checking with the guys, he sounded his intention to quit after the six-month tour to join.

Lodge School Wins Under-15 Title By 29 Runs

For the third time in its long and stellar cricketing history, Nature Valley Lodge School hoisted the LIME Schools Under-15 trophy, after defeating Garrison Secondary by 29 runs at the BET Ground yesterday afternoon.

After resuming from their overnight score of 168-9, Lodge was eventually dismissed for 174, leaving Garrison to make 189 for victory. Garrison, however faltered during their run chase, falling 29 runs short of the target on 160 all out.

Lodge School coach Clifton Philips praised his players for holding their nerve and never faltering under pressure, especially after they were dismissed for just 106 in their first innings.

“When you are coming into the final day there is always pressure. But I believe most of that pressure is the one you put on yourself. I thought that once they managed to get up to 189, I thought that we could get home. But obviously Garrison, this being their first time in the final they wanted it very much, so we knew we would have to fight,” said Philips.

Philips, who has coached Lodge School for the past 19 years, noted that while they did not play Garrison in any of their preliminary games, he asked the guys to remain focused and to not underestimate their opponents.

“I asked them to focus and stick close to the basics, don’t go to far away from them; keep focused on the job on hand and to take each moment as they go and work from there” said Philips.

A visibly upset Garrison coach Elvis Howard, lauded his players for not only making it to the final but for also playing with grit and determination during the three days of competition.

“I told the guys from the outset that we are not only going to the final. We want the record to also show that we played very well in the final. I am so happy for my boys, obviously we are a bit disappointed that we didn’t win, but the fighting spirit showed today by my school was tremendous and I think the boys will be happy with the way they fought today,” said Howard.

Howard praised the Lodge School on their victory, but admitted his team let the game get away from them, after having their opponents on the back foot.

“After having Lodge on 126 for nine, we lost the plot in the last 45 minutes of the game and it really showed, because I thought that with 126 for nine the most we would be looking to chase is 150. And it came back to haunt us, those 28 runs that we lost by,” said Howard. (PH)

Motorcade Scheduled To Promote Concert

The organizers of the Fighting Back and Moving Forward concert have scheduled a Motorcade for Saturday, August 14, 2010 which will involve several of the artiste performing for the concert; Biggie Irie, Terry Mexican, Allison Hinds, Peter Ram, Salt, Mexican, Blood etc.

The motorcade leaves the Party Stand at 10:00 a.m. sharp with the group Freekz Customz leading. The convoy will make its way around the City of Bridgetown and its environs before heading back to the Party Stand. From the Party Stand the group will proceed to Wisers on Brandon's Beach for a lime from 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Layne And Trotman Crowned King And Queen

Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the formidable King Ferdinand of Spain are the new royalty in Society, St. John. Embodied by Zoe Trotman and Shaquille Layne, the two emerged as the cream of the royal crop at The Lodge School’s pageant last Sunday evening at the St. Gabriel’s auditorium.

Along with the coveted title, the pair copped best casual and formal wear. Layne’s formal wear featured the purple and white regal wear of the 15th Century, accentuated by white pantaloons and stockings. Trotman strutted in a white silk georgette gown, decorated with gold metallic lace. The look was finished by a gold headpiece.

She tied with Mara Weekes who, in keeping with her portrayal of Queen Nefertiti, donned a flowing white and orange chiffon gown, completed with Nefertiti’s signature headdress. The first runner up position went to Cherrie-Ann Wiggins who represented Queen Catherine and Chad Lowe as Prince Charles. Lowe and Weekes were the most photogenic of the 10 contestants.

Wiggins also walked away with best talent in the female category with the witty No Show, which dealt with the controversial cancellation of the Vybz Kartel/Mavado concert earlier this year. Johnathan Jeffrey’s rendition of John Legend’s If You’re Out There gained him best talent in the male category. Weekes was also the second runner up, sharing the title with Shai Edwards who portrayed Shaka Zulu. The pair were Mr. and Ms. Congeniality as well.

Edwards’ performance throughout the evening was commendable, much better than his final placement after the judge’s decision. He stood out in the talent and formal wear sections and was the only contestant to incorporate the royalty he represented in all sections of the show.

Other winners for the evening were Mario Boyce, who represented King Tutankhamun. He received incentive prizes for his punctuality and the most improved male. Most punctual female went to “Princess Diana” Jamilya Jordan, while Chantal Ward as Queen Isabella was the most improved female. (LW)

Althea Belgrave Women's Cross Country Assistant Coach

Entering her second season with the Rainbow Wahine track and field and cross country programs is former Barbados national champion Althea Belgrave. Belgrave will oversee the distance runners and the cross country team.

The former Barbadian national record holder in the 1500-meter event, Belgraves comes to Honolulu after serving as a graduate assistant at Florida State, where she oversaw the compliance and recruiting responsibilities for the Seminole women’s cross country team.

After arriving in the United States from her native St. John, Barbados, Belgrave attended the University of Idaho, where she spent four seasons as a member of the track and field team and two years with the cross country program. At Idaho, she earned all-Big West Conference honors in the 800-meter event in 1997. Belgrave also ran the 5000-meter

Belgrave is a three-time Barbadian national champion in the 800-meter and 1500-meter events, the latter of which she held the national record.

Following her graduation in 1997, Belgrave worked as a volunteer coach and then as a graduate assistant. As a graduate assistant, Belgrave handled middle and long distance runners on the 2003 Big West women’s championship track and field team. She also helped with meet management for indoor and outdoor home jumps events.

Belgrave earned her master’s degree in education at Idaho in counseling of human services.

Student Gives Art To QEH

The Children's Ward of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been given a lift - compliments of a sixth form student of The Lodge School.

Kevin Ward recently presented 20 hand-painted ceiling tiles created from fairy tales and nursery rhymes.

"I am very proud of the project. It was hard work, but it was all worth it and I hope the children like it very much," he said.

Jean Prescott-Bullen, head of The Lodge School's art and music department, said the paintings were done for Ward's Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations creative project.

The project was started last November, but the idea for the artwork came when one of Ward's friends visited the paediatric ward.

Ward said he had already received requests to create artwork for private homes, but for now, he will focus on upcoming exams. (LK)

Lodge On Track For Chess Win

The Lodge School Under 13 team has taken a commanding lead in the United Insurance Inter-School Chess Championship. After four rounds of competition, The Lodge School has accumulated 36 points from a possible 40 to lead the standings. The Lodge team has been in dominant form throughout the competition. The only team who managed to score any points against them was the Harrison College team which went down 6-4.

The round three clash between Harrison College and The Lodge School was the toughest battle so far as the two teams both, boasting a number of National Junior Players, fought for supremacy to gain the lead in this decisive round.

Harrison College entered round three just two points behind Lodge and was hoping for a big win to capture the lead, but Lodge, the defending champions, played with great determination and skill to extend their lead as they registered wins on boards two, three and five. Jakeel Harewood, Christopher Grant and O’Shara Mason won for The Lodge School while Rohansonn Waithe and Raheem Layne scored for Harrison College on boards one and four.

The Lodge players went on to defeat Combermere convincingly and put themselves in the firm control of their title defence. Harrison College also pulled off a big win against Queen’s College but they are still six points behind the leaders. Combermere is in third place on 18 points, closely followed by Queen’s College on 16 points.

This year’s under 13 division has seen a number young female players who came out of the primary school chess programme performing outstandingly for their new secondary schools. Nalini Persaud of Queen’s College, Cherise Austin of Combermere , O’Shara Mason of the Lodge School and Asha Chadderton of Harrison College have all made their mark on this year’s United Insurance Inter-school Competition. Action continues on Saturday at The St Michael School 9 a.m.

Lodge Principal Speaks On Overcrowding Of Schools

Even a maximum of 900 students is too large for secondary schools to manage. Principal of the Lodge School Trevor Pilgrim made this assertion at the school’s speech day this morning.

“I recently read in the newspapers with the construction of two new schools, that the maximum student roll in any secondary school will not exceed 900, which will considered to be the maximum number that the school can manage with reasonable ease. Eight hundred and fifty would be even better. But once you are over 1000, there are specific problems that emerge,” he said in his address.

Pilgrim was referring to Government’s plan to set a limit in the island’s secondary schools. It is to be one aspect of the Medium Term Development Strategy 2010-2014 aimed at the infrastructural development of the educational system and was prepared by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Empowerment, Innovation, Trade, Industry and Commerce.

The principal of the Society, St. John institution said the school was overcrowded with a current roll of 1 039 students and the plant was not able to cater this number. This overcrowding has resulted in “a palpable restlessness and a lack of focus among some students”, he added.

The situation has also led Pilgrim to defend the idea of having two deputy principals in each school: one to deal with administrative matters and one to deal with problem solving. In this way, he said, principals can get on with the work of improving the programmes at their schools.

“Principals are bogged down with student’s complaints, irate parents and what I call ‘adminis-trivia’. Principals talents can be put to better use.” Pilgrim also lamented the behaviour of some parents who make it difficult to enforce order within schools.

“One problem that I have is the rapidly growing number of parents and guardians who do not support school policy and school rules. This leads to display of defiance from their children and wards,” he said.

“They thoroughly defend their ward’s enfringement of the school rules and show open hostility to principals. They are uncooperative, angry when their children are punished... and are always ready to run to the Ministry of Education, their lawyer or the press and sometimes all three with their version of events.”

However, giving into those parents was not an option, as Pilgrim believed “the school should remain a fortress of social control or society will be plunged into chaos.” The Lodge School, which has won numerous local and regional awards, championships and competitions over the past year, also highlighted some of its talent during the proceedings, including its own miniature Michael Jackson Jed Clarke and its various musical groups. Old Scholars Monthly Lime & Inter-House Sports

Please note that the Lodge School Old Scholars Monthly Lime will be held on February 5, 2010 at the Lodge School. It will coincide with the Lodge School Inter-House Sports.

We are encouraging all Old Scholars to wear their old house colours to the sports day. There will be fun events for the old scholars to participate in which will commence at approximately 1:00 p.m. just before the Relays. After the relays we will have a few more events before we retire to the School Hall for refreshments.

As usual we urge every one to bring their coolers the drinks the eats what ever we can share. Come out and support your old house, and by extension , the athletes who will be representing The lodge School at the upcoming Inter School Sports.

Look out for the Theme Limes. Coming at the end of February will be the Lovers Lime (Red and White affair).

Rev. Michael Steele & Niki Lanik Promoting Human Rights

Barbados’ Ambassador for Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) the Reverend Michael Steele held a press conference at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium on Friday. In attendance at the press conference was Austrian race-car driver and human rights activist Niki Lanik who is in Barbados promoting human rights.

Reverend Steele met with Lanik while in Switzerland, during a human rights summit held there recently. “It was a great opportunity, because we got to see what is happening in other countries,” said Rev. Steele of the summit. He added that while there is a lot of work to be done, the schools are co-operative, as are the various Government Ministries, who, Rev. Steele said, help in any way that they can.

The 22-year-old Lanik is an Ambassador for Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), an organisation that was started approximately seven years ago. This year, the organisation which began with just a music video and later an educational DVD, now offers an educational pack, that can be ordered for schools free of charge, from their website. Geoffrey Cave Sworn In As New Senator

Geoffrey Cave, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cave Shepherd was sworn in as Barbados' newest Senator on yesterday morning.

In a short ceremony at Government House, Cave took the Oath of Allegiance in front of Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands.

Cave was accompanied by his wife Anne Cave and children Roger and Simone.

Cave replaces the late Senator, Sir John Stanley Goddard.

Cave has a distinguished career in business in Barbados, being involved as Director and Chairman of several leading private and public companies in Barbados. He also served on the Board of several governmental and non-governmental organisations and has been an advisor and trustee to numerous schools, colleges, universities and charities.

In the Queen New Years Honours List in 2003, he was appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and in October 2007 the University of the West Indies conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).

Union Centre Now Bears Frost's Name

The Barbados Secondary Teachers' Union (BSTU) has renamed its headquarters The Patrick Frost Centre.

In a ceremony at the newly named centre in Belleville, St Michael, BSTU president Mary Redman said the renaming was in honour of Frost's outstanding work in the labour movement and the teachers' union in particular.

"It is impossible to thank you for your integrity, deceny, caring and heart. Genuine caring and love for humankind is something that cannot be faked and persons recognise it in you.

"You have always had a clear and unchanging philosophy on the importance of the all-inclusive and strategic role of the union in the development of any society. You have worked hard for over 30 years to see the little BSTU as a respected as recognised union in this country . . . ," she said.

Frost thanked the BSTU for the "undeserved" honour, but told the audience it was a group effort.

"Whatever I may have accomplished, I have not done it by myself. I have always had people around me . . . ," he said.

The ceremony featured the unveiling of a plaque and a portrait of Frost made of plaster. It also involved birthday celebrations as the renaming ceremony was planned specially to fall on Frost's 69th birthday. (CA)

Sir John Stanley Goddard Passes On

RETIRED Barbadian businessman and Senator, Sir John Stanley Goddard is dead. Sir John, 78, died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Friday night where he had been taken after taking ill.

The death of Sir John has come as a shock to many, since reports suggest it was not known he was ill. His departure will leave a void in the discussions and debates in all aspect of the national life since Sir John always felt he had a contribution to make on important issues facing the country and its people. He leaves to mourn his wife, five children and 16 grands.

Sir John, who was born in St. Vincent, grew up in Barbados. He was well known in business circles not only in Barbados but across the Caribbean where he served in many capacities of business.

He was a member of a number of regional private sector agencies and sat on the board of many businesses. However, some his greatest contributions came in the roles he played in the continuing development and expansion of Goddard Enterprises Limited (GEL), a family owned business, which has extended by leaps and bound. GEL, whose businesses span finance, manufacturing, and a wide range of services, is currently one of the leading conglomerates across the Caribbean with operations also in both South America and Central America.

His support for that company, which is listed on the stock exchange in Barbados has won him many kudos. Sir John was knighted for the contribution to business. Sir John served on the executive of the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce (CAIC) the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Barbados Private Sector Association, and more than a year ago retired from the Board of the Caribbean Financial Services Corporation. A ceremony marking his contribution to that company was held at the Lion Castle Polo Clubhouse last year, and attended by staff and key principles of the institution.

He was also active in the Centre for Management Development in its formative years when it began offering post graduate training at the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill).

Although he had retired from active involvement in business affairs, Sir John remained a commentator on several economic, business, social and political issues in the country. He has been a Senator in the Barbados Parliament for several years and attended the sitting last week. During his stint in the Upper Chamber Sir John has made significant contributions whether they were related to government finances, the country’s national debt, economic management, the overall economy, and controversial subjects as well.

He also contributed to the development of BICO, this country’s major ice cream manufacturer. Last night Edwin Thirlwell, Chairman of that company, said Sir John had served for many years as a Director of BICO, starting from the 1960s until about 2002 when he (Thirlwell) took over. “He was a gentleman and was a valuable partner,” according to Thirlwell.

Fellow Senator, Frances Chandler was quoted on radio last night as saying that Sir John was a true gentleman. She recalled the many occasions on which Sir John gave her advice. According to Senator Chandler Sir John had a love for agriculture and never ceased a moment discussing the subject.

INDEPENDENT SENATOR and former business leader Sir John Stanley Goddard is dead.

Sir John, a frank and at times thought-provoking voice in the Senate and a former leader of the Goddard group of companies, passed away at about 2:15 a.m. yesterday. He was 77.

The death followed a brief illness and stunned members of the large Goddard family.

"He went into the hospital yesterday," son Geoffrey Goddard told the SUNDAY SUN.

"We thought he was going to come home this weekend. But things didn't work out that way."

Sir John died surrounded by members of his family at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been taken after complaining of feeling unwell.

"He was in very high spirits yesterday [Friday]," his son said.

"He was making a lot of fun and joking. We never thought he would have died. Maybe it was just a case of age, something as simple as that."

Sir John was awarded the Gold Crown Of Merit in 1990 and the Knight Of St Andrew was conferred in 1993 for his contribution to commerce and the community.

He spent most of his life working with the group of companies launched by his grandfather Joseph Nathaniel Goddard.

He joined the business as a chartered accountant, after returning to Barbados in 1957 from studies at Queen's University and a five-year stint with Price Waterhouse.

Over the years, he moved up the ranks to serve as managing director and as chairman of the board of Goddard Enterprises Limited (GEL). He also headed the board of directors of several agencies, including the Private Sector Organisation.

Yesterday Prime Minister David Thompson headed the list of people paying tribute to Sir John. Thompson described him as "an outstanding Barbadian".

"Over the years that I have known him, his has always been a voice of reason and a very stabilising influence in the corporate sector, in the area of social policy, even in politics, though he has not been in the traditional sense a Barbadian politician," Thompson said.

"His wise counsel will be missed, particularly in those spheres.

"In the 1991 economic crisis many would not have known of the tireless work that Sir John did in seeking to build consensus across the private sector for the economic programme which was implemented. That programme became known throughout the world as a major triumph for a small developing country."

Opposition Leader, Mia Mottley said: "We shall miss his contributions to debate in the Senate, which were characterized by both frankness and fairness and an ability to zero in on matters, which were of importance to ordinary people."

President of the Senate Branford Taitt is out of the island, but Deputy President of the Senate Kerryann Ifill said of Sir John: "His contributions in the Senate were always filled with wisdom and considerable value as he often took a view of proceedings which others did not. His presence in the chamber will be greatly missed."

Prominent lawyer and former minister Sir Henry Forde described Sir John's contribution in the sphere of business as "exceptional".

"He was a nation-builder in many respects, both in industry and in giving proper non-partisan guidance to how we should run our country," he added.

Sir John is survived by his wife Katherine Lady Goddard and five children - Geoffrey, Susan, Paula, Lynnette and Julie - as well as 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sir John is the third Senator to have died in about two weeks. His death follows that of former senators Enid Lynch and Marjorie Blackman. (TY)

Lodge Pageant 2009: Open Your Eyes To The World

The Lodge School will take over the Christ Church Foundation School hall from 6:00p.m. on June 14th. The event will be the 2009 edition of the Mr. and Miss Lodge School Pageant entitled Universal Perspective.

This year the contestants are required to widen their knowledge of the world as each couple has been assigned a country to represent on the night. Part of getting themselves ready for the night is to increase their knowledge of the respective nations so that they can answer questions about these places.

In preparation for the final night the contestants have received training in dance by Mr. Kevin Carvalho and have been given the chance to gain some early points with modeling and speech.

Support these young people as they raise funds for graduation. Come out and support the six couples looking to impress their friends and the judges next week.

Well clan, I had the faith that it was only a matter of time before we started to make some movements in the right direction. This site for the Lodge School Alumni is not just a welcomed sight, it surpasses expectation.

Much thanks must be heaped upon Glyne for his initiative. This site has the potential to pull all the parts of Lodge School together; past, present and even future. Already it has proved to be a good virtual liming spot. It has many features and there is a space here for everyone; young and old(er).

One great feature is the links to Facebook Lodge School groups. It means that from one site we can get to see all the activities and neworks between the different year groups. Hopefully, we can produce a Lodge School year e-book or e-magazine, featuring the school and its activities.

I am sure that the Principal of the school may find this a useful forum to keep the alumni abreast of what is happening at the school and this in turn will give us an opportunity to give back by engaging in or contributing to these activities.

The most sensational part of the site is the webcast. Already we have Michael Jules volunteering to do as much as he can with sports. It means too that next inter-school sports, we should be able to broadcast live and with the right team, could cover all the sporting activities that include Lodge School.

We certainly look forward to this site growing at a rapid rate. Already the troops are rolling in and the site is only 3 days old. Houba, the Lodge School yahoogroup was a good initiative at the time and maybe we have not yet outgrown that. It is a reliable means of communicating and maybe we should incorporate that idea into this site, especially because it has been penetrated by spammers.

My biggest concern is that we need to reach the students at the school; especially from fourth form up. Maybe we can do it right here.

PURE, UNADULTERATED MAYHEM is wha' Blood is talking 'bout for Crop-Over 2K9. "We're out of the box and blazing for Crop-Over 2009," said Anderson Blood Armstrong, the main maestro of local record company Reddhead Records Inc.

The singer and producer was speaking to GROOVE just prior to performing the title track of his recently dropped soca album Chaos for this year's Sweet Fuh Days season at the first series of the Super Six Cavalcades last weekend.

"I don't really want to call it Crop-Over music even though I released it in time for Crop-Over; it's music that can last a lifetime," he said over the music in the National Cultural Foundation's car park.

His reasons for releasing so early before the pre-season pandemonium?

"It makes sense to come out early. We've got the cavalcade here on May 2. The people are going to come out and enjoy the music and it is good to be able to offer them something new for the festival," reasoned the former co-lead vocalist of the band Square One.

Releasing early has its obvious market advantages. The earlier the music gets to the radio stations, the higher the rotation; the higher the rotation, the more popularity grows and the likelihood of more gigs for the artistes.

"We have moods for everybody on the album, from pan to chaos to some nice ragga soca songs.

"We've got love songs and those with double entendre," he said of the 24-track album, adding that a lot more careful attention was paid to musicality.

Blood said that he would be entering the Pic-O-De-Crop, Party Monarch and Groovy Monarch competitions representing Headliners Calypso Tent.

Also appearing on the album Chaos are Mikey, Contone, Dr, Windchaser, Mexican, Ishaka, Troy Special, Smokey Burke, Alison Hinds, Keann, and others.

7th Chess Title For Lodge

THE LODGE SCHOOL created history last week when they were crowned overall champions in the United Insurance Secondary Schools Chess Championships, taking their tally to seven consecutive inter-school titles.

In an all-round effort led by their Under-13 team which retained the Under-13 Division title, The Lodge School were simply in a league of their own, racking up an overall 167 points to beat nearest rival Harrison College by 56 points.

Harrison College, while not winning any of the three divisional titles, demonstrated that they are well on the way to becoming a serious contender by taking second position in the overall standings with 111 points. Harrison College's achievement came primarily through their Under-20 and -13 teams who placed third in their respective divisions.

The St Michael School, who played host to this year's championships, took overall third place with 109 points and the Under-15 Division title in a dramatic finish when they pipped Coleridge and Parry by one point.

Lester Vaughan, who suffered by not having an entry in the Under-13 Division, place fourth overall with 97 points thanks to the division-winning performance by their Under-20 team and a useful fourth place in the Under-15 Division.

Coleridge and Parry were the big losers this year, falling from the No. 2 spot which they have held over the last two years to fifth overall with 94 points, and then missing out on the Under-15 title in the dramatic final-round battle with Harrison College, which they won but dropped one point too many, to allow The St Michael through on the finish line.

Queen's College, a powerhouse ten years ago, continues to be a cause for concern, only fielding an Under-13 team this year. Despite this, Queen's College put in a spirited performance to take second in the Under-13 Division and, solely on the basis of their Under-13 points, place sixth in the overall standings with 46 points. Candidate Masters Win United Insurance Secondary Schools Challenge

Candidate Master Martyn Del Castilho and Woman Candidate Masters Corinne Howard and Katrina Blackman posted an impressive 30 - 2 win in the United Insurance Secondary Schools Chess Challenge to officially open the 2009 United Insurance Secondary Schools Chess Championships on Wednesday March 4th 2009 at The Lodge School.

Barbados' newest Candidate Masters Martyn Del Castilho of UWI, Corinne Howard of Barbados Community College and Katrina Blackman of Coleridge & Parry School were surgical in their dispatch of the thirty three egger students who came from Defending Secondary Schools Champion The Lodge School, Harrison College, Combermere, The St. Michael School, Alleyne and Coleridge & Parry.

Del Castilho had the toughest challenge of the three exhibitors taking on fifteen students simultaneous. However without even breaking a sweat he completed his assignment with an hour to spare, winning all fifteen games.

Howard whose challenge comprised nine students came very close to a perfect score when she ran out of time in a won position against Justin Parsons, a 1st form student at The Lodge School, to end with eight wins and one loss.

Blackman, who is still at Secondary School, put in a commendable performance by scoring seven wins, one draw and one loss. Winning against Blackman was Alchino Haynes, a 5th form student of The Lodge School, while Jerome Harewood, a 1st former of The Lodge, drew his game.

Attention now turns to the actual United Insurance Secondary Schools team competition which will be contested in three age categories Under-13, Under 15 and Under-20.

Defending Champions The Lodge School will be going for a historic 7th consecutive Over-All title and up to press time their coach Dr. David Jordan appeared very confident about the school's prospects.

In the Under-20 Division the main competition for The Lodge School is expected to come from Lester Vaughn which will be returning with most of the members of its 2008 team who placed 2nd to The Lodge last year.

The Under-15 Division is expected to be the most fiercely contest age category with strong challenges to The Lodge School coming from Coleridge & Parry, Harrison College, Queens College and The St. Michael School.

In the Under-13 category The Lodge School are also expected to start as favorites with Harrison College possibly being the main rival.

Play start at 9:00 a.m. with the 1st Round and 1:00 p.m. with Round 2 at The St. Michael School on Saturday March 7th 2009.

The featured event of the ceremony will the United Insurance Chess Challenge, a simultaneous chess exhibition in which thirty six players from ten schools are expected to challenge Barbados' newest Candidate Masters Martyn Del Castilho of UWI, Corinne Howard of Barbados Community College and Katrina Blackman of Coleridge & Parry School.

Del Castilho, Howard and Blackman all qualified for their FIDE Candidate Master titles as members of the Barbados Chess Team at the 2008 World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.

A former student of The Lodge School and a freshman at UWI, Del Castilho is currently the highest rated junior player in the English Speaking Caribbean. In Dresden he played Board 2 for the Barbados Men where he qualified for the FIDE Candidate Master Title. He will play sixteen players in the United Insurance Chess Challenge, a feat which should be quite a challenge given that he only has 1 � hours complete his games.

Howard, a former student of Combermere and a final year student at the Barbados Community College, is a former Barbados Ladies Champion. She spearheaded the Barbados Ladies Team in Dresden with a Board 1 performance that would earn her a FIDE Rating and the FIDE Women Candidate Master Title. Like Del Castilho her time limit will 1 � hours but her challenge will be ten players.

Blackman, a 5th former at Coleridge & Parry School, is the only member of the exhibitor panel still at secondary school. The reserve player on the Barbados Ladies Team in Dresden, this talented and determined teenager posted a performance beyond that of a reserve and qualified for the FIDE Women Candidate Master Title. She will also play ten players for her part in the United Insurance Chess Challenge.

The Opening Ceremony is schedule to start at 1:00 p.m. at The Lodge School in St. John with representatives from the Ministry of Sport, National Sports Council and sponsors United Insurance on hand to make the ceremonial first move and officially open the competition.

Actual play in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-20 Divisions will commences with the rounds one and two on Saturday March 7th at 9:00 a.m. at The St. Michael School. Emptage Are Lodge Champs

RAIN PUT a serious damper on The Lodge School Inter-House Sports Day which came off at the Massiah Street, St John school grounds on Friday.

In the very wet and muddy conditions many of the athletes slid or fell, while others literally trotted to the tape to avoid the embarrassment of falling.

However, at the end of the melee, it was all Emptage House with 649 points emerging as championship. Wedderburn was second with 581.5, Laborde, third with 541, followed by Gooding with 393.5. Last year's defending champions Codrington House finished at the bottom of the table in fifth place with a mere 282 points.

Physical education teacher at the school Clifton Phillips told SUNSPORT he was pleased with the efforts from the organisers and athletes who ran their hearts out to make the meet a success, despite the wet and treacherous conditions.

"It is unfortunate we did not get to see the athletes at their best since times or records were out of the question, as it was a matter of survival for most of the competitors, but they all gave of their best in the conditions."

In the junior division Shemar Goodridge and Arielle Johnson emerged as the victor and victrix Ludorum with 59 and 41 points, respectively, while in the seniors it was Rico Tull and Sade Sealy with 50 and 55 points, respectively. (CH)

Greaves Does It In Style

WIDE SMILES and nods of approval followed a spectacular run by Wibisco Stars' Shekeim Greaves in the men's100 metres during League I action at the National Stadium last Saturday night.

The Lodge School athlete, and son of Empire spinner Sherlon Greaves, didn't even make the Under-20 Boys' final at the CARIFTA Games last year after a false start. He got a good one this time and powered down the straight to win in 10.56 seconds.

His high-stepping strides drew comparisons to Olympian Obadele Thompson and there were nods of approval from among the selectors. Others wanted to know who he was since it was his first meet for the season. The challenge will now be to repeat and improve his times over rounds.

Elroy Agard of Rising Stars, unbeaten for the whole season, was a distant second in10.96 seconds after being left in the blocks.

Tongues wagging

Jerrad Mason of Rising Stars also had tongues wagging after an upset victory over Track & amp;Field Academy's Shaquille Alleyne in the 800 metres. What made the victory even more stunning, is that Mason is 14 years old, while Alleyne is in his second year in the Under-17 division.

Nicholas Henry of Wibisco Stars set the early pace until Alleyne took over after 500 metres and Mason didn't respond to the move all along the back stretch. Heading for home, Alleyne was a comfortable leader when Mason found another gear and pulled alongside. The two sprinted for the finish, Mason getting home in 1:59.84to Alleyne's 1:59.88.

Mason also won the400 metres in 51.37, both times well within the Inter-school records.

Callum Wright of Elite Distance looks set to take over now that his brother Matthew has moved into the Under-20 division.He was third in the 3 000 metres in 9:43.20 minutes, around the same time his brother did in 2007, his first year in the Under-17 division. The Inter-school record of 10:15.69 which he holds is definitely under threat.

Jason Wilson took point, only to lose the lead to Matthew with 300 metres to go. Matthew (9:41.30) seemed set to run away with it when Wilson (9:41:10) began his sprint with 80 metres to go, and couldn't hold him off.

Shani Adams, also of Elite Distance, won the girls' race in 11:36.77 from club mate Najuma Comissiong (12:08.74).

Easy winner

In her last race before leaving the island on scholarship, Kierre Beckles ran against the clock, a comfortable winner in 14.26 seconds in the 100 metres hurdles. Rising Stars teammate Tramaine Maloney showed he has plans to qualify for the CARIFTA Games with 14.65 and 59.65 seconds respectively in the 100mh and 400m hurdles.

Other noteworthy performances came from BC Trac's Mario Burke with 12.73 and 26.85 in the Under-13 Boys' 100 and 200 metres; Tariq Belves of Harrison College with 11.85 in the Under-15 100m dash and Shaquille Hollingsworth of Rising Stars with 11.56 in the Under-17 Boys' race.

Sprint double

BC Trac's Jalisa Burrowes did the Under-13 sprint double in 13.83 and 28.66, while Akela Taylor of Quantum Leap took the 400m (60.83) and 75m hurdles (12.61).

Pacers' Ronson Small (49.13) also kept his fans happy with a win in the 400 metres while teammates Christopher Davis (49.41) came second, and Joshua Walcott took the Under-15 race in 54.33.

The field events were not as spectacular, although there were some encouraging performances. Javelin gold medallist John Jones warmed up with 53.80 metres as he seeks to get the tougher Under-20 qualifying standard. His sister Akela Jones leaped 5.33 metres in the Under-17 Girls' long jump and Kemar Jones seems to be back to good form with 13.70min the triple jump.

Lodge More Than Ready For Facelift

Years of inadequate and derelict facilities and high maintenance bills are about to come to an end for teachers and staff of The Lodge School.

If things go according to plan, construction of two new blocks, a hall, pavilion, new bathrooms, additional exits and other refurbishments to the facility will get underway at the St John compound in April as part of a $25 million project.

Principal Trevor Pilgrim told the SATURDAY SUN it was a long time in coming, and highly anticipated.

"We're extremely happy that we're finally going to have some improvement in the physical plant of the school.

"We have been operating for many years with severe challenges.

"The school has done well despite the challenges, but of course we anticipate that with better plant, better facilities, better equipment, we would be in a position to do even better... One of the main areas of relief would be the absence of overcrowding," Pilgrim disclosed.

He said there were a number of health and safety concerns at the school, which celebrates its 264th anniversary this year. He said windows sometimes fell out, several of the buildings were mouldy and "compromised" the health of occupants, and there were several cracks and vegetation in the buildings.

Pilgrim said the current population had outgrown the physical plant, which was not built to accommodate a roll of 1 004.

The school is in the process of acquiring additional land from Codrington Trust for the construction of the new hall.

"The assembly hall is totally inadequate, it cannot accommodate the school roll, so we have our assemblies in the open.

"If it rains we have to cancel assembly or postpone it, and if it's too hot the students also have problems. If there is any function we have, we have to rent tents and so on," Pilgrim stated, adding that classrooms and staff accommodations were inadequate as well.

The Memorial Hall will be kept for historical purposes. Pilgrim noted that it was constructed in the memory of former students who died in the two world wars.

He said a lot of money had been spent on maintenance over the years. Last year alone the figure for building maintenance was $200 000.

Block I, which houses the music room, bathrooms and other facilities will be demolished and replaced by a two storey block.

The "cramped" Block J for sixth formers will be demolished as well, making room for another two-storey structure.

Construction will be done in phases, and Pilgrim said he expected minimal dislocation during the process.

Prefabricated buildings will be erected to move students from the areas being worked on.

Adjustment of the school hours, and a traffic diversion from the road leading to the compound, are among considerations for when the project gets underway. (YB)

25 Million Dollar Upgrade For The Lodge School

The Lodge School is in for an upgrade that is likely to cost $25 million.

The project, set to start in the new financial year, was announced on Friday by Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones.

The Lodge School, which has fallen into substantial disrepair, is one of the schools on which work will commence in the new financial year...," Jones said in the House of Assembly.

"That facility could possibly end up costing in the region of $25 million. It is absolutely mind-boggling when one looks at the kind of expenditure (required)."

According to Jones, the plan includes protecting buildings of historical importance at the St John school.

Over the years Government has spent millions of dollars building and upgrading primary and secondary schools under an Education Sector Enhancement Programme, partly funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank.

Jones made the comments when the House debated the education component of a resolution to put the sum of $55 million from the Consolidated Fund at the disposal of Government to supplement the 2008-09 Estimates of Expenditure.

Broomes Cleans Up

There is a new schoolboy bodybuilding champ in town, and his name is Ramon Broomes.

The Lodge School student won the title Friday evening at Lester Vaughan School where the Sunshine Cereal/Gatorade Mr Schoolboy Bodybuilding and Miss Body Fitness Championships were held.

Broomes had the complete package of muscularity, hardness and balance, which was presented before the judges in a smooth, classical posing routine. At the end of the evening he also walked away with Best Poser and Most Muscular titles.

His accomplishments will be a tremendous boost for him as he prepares for the World Juniors Championship in the Czech Republic next weekend.

Kamal Sealy has been around for about three years in this competition, and has the ability to win it. When he first came on stage, he looked like a winner. He was big, muscular and defined.

However, as the competition progressed, and during the comparisons with Broomes, he started to fade, while Broomes kept his definition.

For example, the muscle separation between Broomes' quads and hamstrings were evident in the side pose, but not in Sealy's. He was in good shape, but needed to come in a bit harder to beat Broomes.

Johnathan Nana was in his best condition ever in Mr Schoolboy. The UWI student added a few quality pounds over the year and was more muscular and defined this time around.

He didn't have the size to win the title, but Nana is one to watch as he progresses. The size will come, and as long as he maintains the quality of muscle he has, he will do even better.

Devon Franklyn of Princess Margaret came out of nowhere and had everyone asking: "Who is that guy?" From the moment he walked on stage and started to pose it was evident he was going to make an impact.

He carried a small waist which moved out into a V-shape lats spread. He was symmetrical and well developed and if he puts in the work, he should do better than fourth place.

Also coming out of Princess Margaret were Quantano Parris and Keron Cox, who took fifth and sixth places respectively. Parris carried good muscularity, but his symmetry was weak, while Cox was ripped to the bone, but lacked mass.

In the Body Fitness Senior, Virgene Maynard, who represented Barbados Community College, was head and shoulders above the others. She was poised, smooth and confident, with overall good condition.

Alicia Archer (second) of Foundation and Jeanna Johnson (third) of Alexandra were also in good condition and were separated by a few points. Fourth placed Jenila Atherley of The Lodge was a hit with the audience and should do better as long as she becomes more defined.

Lodge Takes The Spoils

Nature Valley Lodge School are the 2008 champions of the Barbados Cricket Association Sagicor General Shield 40-over-a-side competition. Playing in front of a relatively small but appreciative crowd at the 3Ws oval, Lodge defended what looked to be a mediocre score against 3-time finalists Ince Transport MTW.

Lodge, batting first, put 164 on the score cards, with valuable contributions from the bat of Renaldo Arthur who scored the highest in the contest with 55, Stefan Gooding who added 34 and Renaldo Holder who posted 17. The pick of the MTW bowlers were Raymond Kellman with 3-26, Junior Holder 2-28 and Henry Austin 2-30.

Coming in to bat, MTW would have been confident chasing the modest total set for them by the school boys, however this confidence was short-lived. After fifteen overs MTW had slumped to 58 for four and things kept going downhill from there. The next ten overs saw five wickets falling with the addition of just 42 runs, which meant heartbreak for MTW and delight for the school boys of St. John.

After 25 overs, the fate of MTW could have been written in stone, having meandered to 100 for 9. At approximately 4:20, the number eleven of MTW lifted a pitched-up ball to the fielder at deep long off who easily came around to his left, safely taking the ball and dashing all hopes of victory for Ince Transport MTW.

MTW were all out for 114 off of 29.4 overs. MTW Batsmen who got into double figures were Chad Puckerin and Raymond Kellman both with 20, Curtis Greene with 14 and Mark Bailey who scored 11. The pick of the Lodge School bowlers were Stephan Gooding with 2-17, Mario Miller 4-34 and Diego Stuart 2-19.

Man-of-the-Match honours were spilt between two players this time around with Stephan Gooding and Renaldo Arthur, both of Nature Valley Lodge School, sharing the spoils.

Nature Valley Lodge School received $8 000, while runners-up Ince Transport MTW received $5 500.

The Lodge School Old Scholars Association certainly did not disappoint when they indicated that The Coffin would return this year. Despite the inclement weather earlier in the evening many old scholars boarded the M.V. Harbour Master vessel in order to usher the the "Return of the Coffin".

I must confess that I too almost changed my mind after witnessing the electrifying lightning display overhead before leaving home. Nonetheless, I braved the weather and joined the others already gathered at the pier.

Shortly after departing the Shallow Draught Complex the festive spirit seem to grip everyone on board, it was as though we all wanted to let loose and release the tensions of a hectic work week.

Later in the evening it was time for prizes and also the "Coffin Ceremony" with Mr. Mapp of the ole school reciting the Latin maxims from olden days at the Lodge. It was definitely a memorable voyage, I am eagerly looking forward to next year to see what the LSOSA Executive Committee has planned for the 2009 cruise.

Music was sweet, sweet, Nikos Boxill and DJ Biggs kept things lively all night it was good to see the old faces and some new ones too.There is no doubt, the old clock tower is where you ought to be the last Friday of each month. Lodge School Reunion 2008 - Dover Beach Lime

Immediately following the After Party at Solstice 21 Night Club the Lodge School family proceeded up St. Lawrence Gap for Dover Beach to commence the Reunion Lime. It was evident that some persons were barely able to keep their eyes open, but the gathering was steadfast in their attempt to create Lodge School history - the first 24 hour reunion (10:00 a.m. Saturday until 10:00 a.m. Sunday).

I am happy to report that this goal was successfully achieved despite the heavy early morning showers. We take this opportunity to thank Ryan (former Lodge boy) and the good folks at Jill's Hut for coming on board and supporting this reunion event. Jill's Hut is located on Dover Beach, Christ Church, when visiting the area please drop by and show some love. We must whenever possible support our brethren and keep the old school network alive.

I am eagerly awaiting our next event, the Lodge School Old Scholars Cruise, which, by the way is now being held on September 6, 2008 on board the MV Harbour Master.

Reunion 2008 After Party - Solstice 21 Night Club

After the festivities at the Lodge School grounds earlier in the day, the next event on the reunion agenda was the After Party at Solstice 21 Night Club (next to Club NXS) last night in St. Lawrence Gap, Christ Church. The venue was quite appropriate and definitely lent the right atmosphere for this special affair. Anthony Nadur should be complimented for the recent renovations carried out on the venue (formerly the After Dark Night Club).

Admittedly, despite the doors to the club being open around the scheduled time most of the patrons arrived well after 11:00 p.m. (keeping Bajan time). Some of the VIPs making an appearance during the evening were Wayne 'Cool' Simmons and Terry 'Mexican' Arthur formerly of Square One music fame. The Lodge posse in attendance after gathering at the bar to reminisce and relive the good old days eventually went to the dance floor for some serious jamming.

The event ended just after 3:30 a.m. and it was time to move on over to Dover Beach for the Reunion Lime.

Lodge School Reunion 2008 - Fun Day & Fete

Yesterday's inclement weather managed to prevent several old scholars from making it to the Lodge School grounds. However, it did not dampen the spirits of those persons who were in attendance at the school.

Some persons used the opportunity to reconnect and share past memories others were just glad to be back at The Lodge School for one more 'ole time fete' in the school hall. These two photos indicate they certainly enjoyed themselves as DJs Nikos Boxill, Notorious and others kept them busy.

Personality In Focus - Anderson "Blood" Armstrong

Today we salute an outstanding son of the soil, our very own Anderson "Blood" Armstrong. Anderson Armstrong was born on February 1, 1968 in Barbados. He is one of the most talented males currently on the Soca scene.

Andy started singing as a choirboy while at primary school. He began singing in local competitions back in 1983 while still in high school. At that time he made his professional debut in the Richard Stoute Teen Talent Contest. There he made it all the way to the finals performing his own compositions.That same year he participated under the guidance of his mentor, The Mighty Gabby, in Gabby's first timers Calypso Contest.The following year (1984), with the encouragement of then school teacher and tent manager, Mac Fingall, he joined The Untouchables Calypso Tent.

In 1985, at the age of 17, Andy Armstrong became the youngest person ever to make the National Calypso Finals in Barbados. He placed fifth in the competition which was won by The Mighty Gabby.One of his biggest career moves to date was when in 1986, he along with his friend and former Lodge School mate, George Jones became founding members of one of Barbados' most prominent and one of the Caribbean's leading party bands over the last two decades, Square One.

He is known for his explosive, dynamic and high-energy performances and his versatility as a singer. His debut solo album "Conscience Call" was just another step towards his never-ending quest for maximum musical success. Since that time, he has recorded and produced several solo and compilation albums.

Andy has achieved yet another major accomplishment in his life, where he has built one of the top recording studios on the island from the ground up. Here he has recorded and worked with several of the Crop Over Festival's well known stars such as Red Plastic Bag, Mac Fingall, Alison Hinds, Terry Arthur and the recent additions Mikey, Contone and Pong. Anderson has received several awards and has been recognized as an accomplished artist in the Calypso arena.

Congratulations To Mr & Miss Lodge School 2008

On Sunday, June 15, 2008 Danielle Norris and Justin Poleon captured the titles of Mr and Miss Lodge School 2008. The event was held at the Combermere School auditorium, Waterford, St. Michael. Under the theme Nature In Full Bloom, the twelve contestants depicted an array of beautiful and unique flowers.

Apart from winning the coveted title, Norris and Poleon also captured the awards for Best Male and Female Casual wear and Best Talent, both students aptly displayed their dancing prowess.

Young and upcoming talent in Barbados was also a main feature of the pageant. Many new entertainers performed, although some better than others, for the large crowd in attendance. Of the night's performances, the Adrenaline Dancers were the most entertaining. This group of young men was a hit with the audience with their agile and comical dance routine.

Other winners for the night included Rico Tull and Krystal Forde, who were the first runners-up as well as Jamaal McCollin and Rhadika Yearwood, who were the second runners-up. The sectional winners were: Shomari Inniss and Gianni King - Most Photogenic, Justin Poleon and Krystal Forde - Best Gown, Shomari Inniss and Shana Fields - Mr and Miss Congeniality, Jamaal McCollin and Krystal Forde - The People's Choice with Shana Fields and Jamaal McCollin - Most Improved.
